VMWare View 105 - Broker Small Memory

$

With reference to View Connection Server 5.3, and the event log entry 105 advising the broker has been detected as having been configured with too small amount of physical memory.

I was under the impression with 5.3 that once the amount of memory had been changed the JVM heap size would be automatically adjusted to the optimal size on each start of the View Connection server. That there would be no need for manual adjustment or reinstalling the Connection server. I have increased the memory, restarted and re-installed the Connection server, and am still seeing the event log entry. Is there another step that needs to be carried out to fully resolve this?

Many Thanks

The warning will be there if there is less then 10GB RAM configured for the VM.

How much memory does it have?

Indeed.

It was originally configured with 8GB. I increased this to 16GB yesterday on, hence my confusion outlined in my first post. However, someone has apparently reduced the memory size again, for reasons unknown to me. That will teach me to check again before posting unnessecarily, and explains the prescence of the error. Apologies for having troubled you needlessly.

No, problem! Happy for the easy points! :-)

You can check this file

C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\SSOServer\webapps\lookupservice\WEB-INF\classes\config.properties on the machine where SSO is installed.

This would provide you the details of the RSA database

I did the multi-step migration/upgrade of Windows Server, SQL server and vCenter version, and although it was a real pain with a lot of unanticipated problems, I was happy with the result. Just do the changes one at a time, and you'll be fine.

Unless of course you think your current vCenter Server DB has some problems that you would like to get rid of. In that case I recommend you start fresh and move the hosts and VMs VDS->VSS->new vC->VDS.

Good luck!

Re: VCSA 5.5 U1 very slow?

TOTALLY agreed !!

What are vmware doing ??? So many hardly tested BETA-LIKE product being released ?

Last version (5.1 was the fastest ever since its release) but now it's back to being even slower than the initial release.

It also has continual drop-outs and even stops responding completely.

I have tested everything else on my network and nothing has changed except the new VCSA.

Sadly I have to use this to get advanced features enabled when importing OVF.

What a silly move to drop development for the Windows C# client which most of the known world of admins use and oh boy why even bother with FLASH !

This web-client and SSO is nothing but a pain in the butt and makes admin and management such a pain.

For the die hard trouble-shooter who have the time .. the build info is :

Vendor:VMware Inc.
Appliance Name:VMware vCenter Server Appliance
Appliance Version:5.5.0.10000 Build 1624811

And that took >5 mins to get

Have tried all 3 major IE, Firefox,Chrome.... gave up waiting for chrome eventually :-(

Oh and just for the record ...how do you manage a vcenter properly when the web-client is dead ?

And ..wait for it ... how do you intend to manage individual esxi hosts when you dump the Windows client ? Oh no not command line again ?

So here's the quick fix .. which is not so quick because it means back to windows ..

Install Windows (or clone it .. but how without vcenter ...PFFT ?)

Install vcenter on it (yes we are going back to the roots)

(lots of issues in 5.1 with this like forgetting to add web-client to simple install - but don't worry who cares about wasting clients time)

use windows vcenter instead of VCSA.

If anyone can shed some (non-silver) light here I would appreciate it

In the dark

Dina

Re: Maintenance Mode Question

You have to differentiate between memory consumption and active memory usage. The hypervisor does not have access to the VM guest OS free list and does not know about internal memory mapping of these guests.

It therefore will usually not release memory that was once claimed by the guest until memory pressure is kicking in. So while a VM might have been showing alot of consumed memory the actual working set of this VM is lower most of the time.

This of course needs to be evaluated on a case by case basis as there is no general rule of thumb and it is extremely workload dependent if having high memory consumption on the host is an actual issue or just a cosmetic issue (especially since ESXi 5.0 uses large pages and TPS is kicking in way later than it used to do in 4.x).

SSL Certificate Automation Tool 5.5 can do with some improvments

Hi,

The SSL Certificate Automation Tool 5.5 is a real improvement for replacing certificates for vcenter.

I use it in combination with Derek Seaman toolkit to update all certificates including the esxi host them selves.

The great thing of this the tool kit is that processes every thing 1 one batch and i can request certificates directly to the windows CA. And it can also update the certificates of the esxi hosts as well

But the your automation tool i am missing the update of some  vcenter services mainly:

* AutoDeploy

* DumpCollector

* SysLogCollector

I personally don't use the AuthenticationProxy but i think that one is missing also.

The other issue i think that is not user friendly that can't process all certificates in one batch, so i only have to supply 1 time the password's.

At start you know all services you nice because you specified them at the start when you use the plan option

A specially because pasting a  password from your password save is not working that great in a command line box :-D

Also a question at the start do need to all predefined certificate paths would be nice don't have to confirm all of them, becouse you specified them already in the enveriment barchfile.

these are just my 2 cents, but i really want to know if you agree with me or totaly not ?

WIth kind regards,

In above case lun has removed, we have performed the rescan, and all the workaround.

Still ESX host is showing the stale entry.

Hi Avinash,

That was it. I was running release 0.58. I replace it with release 0.63 and magic ensued. Thanks for the help.

Re: Start fresh with new vCenter 5.5 install vs upgrade?

I have the same question as WaynardS, except I have a 5.0 vCenter server/database that I want to move to a new VM.  I would like to change the OS (currently 2008, move to 2012 R2) and SQL (currently SQL 2008, move to SQL 2012 R2).  We are using a distributed switch, which complicates things as well.  So the question is, can I just build the new VM/SQL server, backup the 5.0 DB and move it to the new machine, restore it in the new version of SQL and install 5.5 pointing to that DB and all will work (assuming I brought over the SSL certs and kept the same name/IP address for the vCenter server)?  If I don't move the ADAM database, is it just security permissions that are lost or do lose anything else?  Isn't licensing info in there as well?

Thanks,

Bob

Bleibold,

I contacted VMware for help regarding my question and the tech said that you can move the database and then install the latest VMware.  A couple of things to note, he said that I needed to install the same sql native client for the dsn that will be on the new machines sql server.  So we are going from sql 2005, with a native client of 9, to sql 2008 with a native client of 10.  I will install native client 10 on the old box before I move the DB to the new server.  Also after you move the database you can change the dsn on the old box and point it towards the new server and vcenter should work fine.  This is a good check to make sure the database moved and there are no problems.  After that you can turn off that machine and install vcenter fresh.  The adam does have the security permissions but I did read that vcenter backs those up to a certain table and can restore them if necessary although I'm not sure if they would be restored by just moving the db?  Not sure about the licensing part either.

If your environment has view be sure to upgrade those components as well because they are not compatible with vcenter 5.5 if they are below version 5.2.

quiescing the guest file system creating two snapshot files

Why would or should quiescing the guest file system create two snapshot files.

In our environment we have the following vmdks.

Syntest.vmdk

Syntest_1.vmdk

Syntest_2.vmdk

Syntest_3.vmdk

Syntest_4.vmdk

When I create a snapshot that quiesces the guest file system it creates both syntest_1-000001.vmdk and syntest_1.000002.vmdk (as well as all the associated files for snapshots).  Here is a screen shot.

syntest.png

Why and is there anything wrong?   I can find a ton of articles about snapshots but nothing that mentions this.

We are currently on ESXi 5.1.0,1157734.

Thank you

Mike

VM Specific vCenter Role and Permission

How to give role and permission to user for a specific virtual machine? If I assign Virtual machine Role to user he can play with all VMs; what if I want to give him rights for single virtual machine?
