VLAN across hosts

Hi all,

I've been tasked with introducing a test environment within our virtual infrastructure. This test environment will eventually have more than 1 ESXi5 host.

Currently, we have 1 data center with 2 clusters. The production cluster has 9 hosts and currently the test cluster has 1 host.

In the test environment I have created a new vSwitch with VLAN1. This successfully breaks the network to VLAN0.

What I've been asked to do it introduce a host in the production environment into the test environment so that certain machines can talk to one another.

In the production host I added the same vSwitch with VLAN1 but unfortunately the machines will not talk to one another across the 2 hosts.

I have read that this will require tagging at one of the 3 points (physical switch, virtual switch or virtual machine). Is this correct or am I missing something really simple?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have the Enterprise license so do not have access to the vDistrubuted Switch which might be an alternative.
