I am in the process of upgrading 2 ESX 4.0 hosts to ESXi 5.1. Both hosts are part of a cluster running under a vCenter Appliance that is on one of the hosts that needs to be upgraded.
At this point I have migrated all VMs to one host so that I may upgrade the first ESX host. All that is left is the vCSA install. I am going to install ESXi fresh so I need to get vCSA off of the host as well.
So I started the migration of my vCSA appliance to a new ESX host by using vMotion (right click VM, migrate>change host)
The migration started OK but it then gave an error stating "The server took to long to respond" and now displays that the Migration is at 65% and hasn't moved for some time. Connecting to vCenter is now fairly sluggish. It still states the Migration is at 65% and it shows that the appliance is still on the same host (the one I need it off of). However, if I log directly onto the 2 ESX hosts (not via vcenter), the vCSA VM is on the correct host that it was moved too!
Any thoughts? Should I have not used vMotion to move vCSA? If not how should I have moved it to a new host? I am hesitant to reboot the vCSA appliance yet as I no that it tends to take a while to do things.
thanks
