256 kb partition created in VM when taking a snapshot with Option "quiesce guest file system"

Hi all

I have the following problem: When I take a snapshot (via VCenter) of a vm and choose the option "quiesce guest file system", then under certain circumstances there is a small partition created during that process and it is not removed when the task is finished. Attached is a PDF showing that issue on a few printscreens.

I know that it is normal that during a snapshot with option "quiesce...", when monitoring disk manager, the partitions are visible double for a few seconds. So when you have a volume C:\, you see this twice for any seconds, and then it disappears. This is the normal behaviour, I assume.

But on some vms, there is a new small partition created during the process. And - that partition is not deleted after the task has finished. When I have a closer look on that partition via diskpart, then I can see that it's size is only 256 KB, and it's type is "unknown".

I can safely delete this partition. But when I take a snapshot the next time, it is generated again. This results in the problem, that our backup tool EMC networker can not properly back up the whole vm. There is an error because of that partition, and the backup failes.

In the moment when I take the snapshot, there is a failure in the event log of the vm. It is described in KB 2006849. But I am not shure if there is really a relationship - because the same event is generated on other vms too, where the problem doesn't occur.

We have about 800 vms running. And affected is about a dozen. I can not find out a correleation why on some vms it happens and not on other. The one thing they have in common: only vms running W2K8 R2 are affected.

I already opened cases both VMware and Microsoft, but with no success.

It occurs on different ESX-Servers running different builds. VMware-Tools are different build numbers also....

Any help is appreciated.

Thx & best regard

Roland
