Unable to change type of SCSI controller when adding to a running VM.
Re: Unable to change type of SCSI controller when adding to a running VM.
You may need to use the Flex client as the HTML5 client is not a feature parity quite yet.

Yup! that's why I was reporting that in the fling site
Upgrading vCenter Server to Appliance and eSXI
Hi All,
I am going to be performing my first upgrade on my VMware environment. Right now I am running vCenter server 6.5 on Windows and eSXI 6.0 on my host.
I have done some research and by all accounts, it looks like I can migrate directly from vCenter Server 6.5 to vCenter Appliance 6.5 and then post that, I can manually upgrade my eSXI host to 6.5 - Dell provides an ISO for this with updated drivers. Does this sound right? Once again, I am a novice so please excuse the ignorance.Thanks.
Re: Upgrading vCenter Server to Appliance and eSXI
You cannot migrate from a Windows 6.5 to the appliance on 6.5 at this time but you can deploy a new vCSA and migrate the hosts.
Re: Upgrading vCenter Server to Appliance and eSXI
Re: Upgrading vCenter Server to Appliance and eSXI
That is for migrating from vCenter 6.0 to vCSA 6.5. OP is already on vCenter 6.5 for Windows. There is no lateral migration path to the vCSA from that version yet.
Re: vMotion not showing available hosts
The local storage iso was also my issue... moved to shared datastore iso and disconnected, now all esxi boxes show as expected...Thanks
Deplolying VCenter Server Appliance
Hi,
I'm trying to set up VMs on my Windows 10 system. EsXI host setup breezed through. But Vcenter setup is throwing several issues. Have now reached a point with this error. Can some one advice?
Failed to start services. Firstboot Error.
Following are the installation steps I did:
- Download Vcenter appliance ISO
- Extract the ISO to get hold of the OVF
- Import the OVF into workstation
- Provide the pre-installation parameters
- IPv4
- DHCP
- Default Gateway
- DNS
- Domain name
- Root password
- Import worked fine but the above mentioned error is coming up.
Re: Deplolying VCenter Server Appliance
I see several people have faced this issue. The solution mentioned was to set DNS record for the FQDN before install. How do I do this??
Re: Deplolying VCenter Server Appliance
create a static entry in you DNS for the hostname you will assign to VC appliance
make sure it is resolvable and the proceed with vCenter setup..
Re: Deplolying VCenter Server Appliance
After appliance is deployed, but before you configure it is step two try following
Log in to the appliance appliance, run echo "::1 localhost.localdom localhost" >> /etc/hosts
Re: vSphere 6.5 webclient displays wrong order of vCenter servers in enhanced linked mode
Hello,
I have same issue, anybody can help or have solution?
SRM also shows as primary protected site B not A.
Re: Cross vCenter vMotion
Dear,
Thank you so much for clarifying.
Just would like to understand if the cross vCenter vMotion possible even if I do not have the shared SAN storage.
Many thanks for clarifying this last bit.
Cheers
Re: Cross vCenter vMotion
Hi!
Cross VC vmotion is possible without shared storage.
However there are some other requirements. For example both vcenter servers must be licensed with Enterprise Plus license.
Fling can only help to migrate VM without web client and single SSO domain.
Read full requirements here VMware Knowledge Base
vCenter HA Network
Hi,
I am in the midst of switching everything over to distributed switches, however before I do this I would like to make sure my vCenter is fully redundant. Looking at the prerequisites it looks like I need an entirely separate network for this. A few questions come to mind as it seems like a waste of physical ports to me. I have a smaller environment of 4 hosts , running 100 Guests.
Can this network be shared with anything else?
I am thinking as vCenter is going to be a major part of my networking once I am moved over, and that I should probably set up lag groups on each host for the vCenter HA network.
Please let me know if you have any other things I should take into consideration.
Thank you for your advice.
Re: vCenter HA Network
The vCHA network does need to be separate, but there's no need to set up a LAG for this as you can easily trunk a new VLAN down existing ports used for regular VM traffic.
Effective permissions with same user in multiple groups/roles
Hi all! I am unable to google a definitive answer to this question, hope someone here can tell me. No lab and I do not have access to the AD to test in prod. env.
User A is member of two Active Directory groups, X & Y. On a particular object in vCenter, group X has the role Administrator and group Y has the role read-only.
What will the effective permission for user A be? Does most restrictive or most permissive win?
Thanks
Re: Effective permissions with same user in multiple groups/roles
The below link should answer your question.
Although its for version 6.0 I am not expecting 6.5 to be any different
Re: Effective permissions with same user in multiple groups/roles
Thanks but that article does not answer my question. Same user in 2 groups with 2 different roles on same object. It only deals with user vs. group precedence and object inheritance as far as I understand it.
